Every Challenge Becomes a Lesson
As a young child, Mr. Hobdy struggled with rhotacism, the inability to properly articulate the letter ‘r.’ Though this speech impediment was a source of frustration, requiring him to attend several years of speech therapy, he now views that challenge as an unexpected gift. While Mr. Hobdy was being taught to communicate better, he learned a valuable lesson: everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and valued, because everyone is equally important.
“The title is irrelevant,” Mr. Hobdy shared. “I own a company, so I’m the president of our company. It doesn’t make me any more important than the young person who bagged my groceries at Publix. It’s truly how I feel, and it’s my DNA.”
A Robust Career in Hospitality
Mr. Hobdy’s rhotacism could have hindered him, but it inspired him to help others feel seen. This inspiration guided him to early roles in hospitality, from a trainer and host at McDonald’s to a cast member at Walt Disney World. Eventually, his persistence and dedication landed him a position as director of guest services and chef concierge at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co. LLC in 1992.
While Mr. Hobdy would go on to pivot between the hospitality, public relations, travel and customer services industries, this initial role at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co. ensured that he would maintain leadership roles throughout his professional career. Today, these various roles have guided Mr. Hobdy to become an experience owner at Assurant in 2025, responsible for designing, executing and optimizing end-to-end customer experiences.
Contributions Outside of Assurant
As Mr. Hobdy has grown into his current role, his professional experience has given him unique insight into the foundations of numerous industries. Around the same time he joined Assurant, he wrote several creative works aimed at developing and understanding effective leadership. These include “Coach to ALIGN: Building Empowered Teams Together,” “FLEX: Connect, Empower, & Lead—A Teen’s Guide to Leadership” and “The FLEX Leader: How to Lead People Your Age by Flexing Personalities.”
Outside of his professional contributions, Mr. Hobdy is actively involved in several civic and membership organizations. He volunteers, sponsors, and donates to Central Florida food banks and other charity organizations. Additionally, he is a member of the International Book Publishing Organization and the National Customer Service Association and a former member of Les Clefs d’Or USA.
Plans for the Future
Within the next few years, Mr. Hobdy aims to continue facilitating leadership seminars, inspiring emerging leaders and participating in book events to help share his message: “Leadership isn’t rooted in authority; it grows through connection.” Now 62 years old, he is reorienting himself toward servant leadership, hoping to reveal everyone’s latent potential to become an effective leader. This will require conversation, something which Mr. Hobdy is eager to participate in.
